Preston Sembler, MS, LMSW
Preston works with individuals and couples, specializing in LGBTQIA+ populations 16 years and older. As a member of this community, he recognizes the need for an unconditionally affirming space to explore issues of sexuality, gender, self-esteem/self-hate, body image, relationship issues, open/poly relationships, anxiety, depression, etc. His counseling style focuses on developing a genuine connection with his clients based on mutual respect and trust in order to facilitate the client’s growth.
He primarily leans towards humanistic approaches, drawing from the likes of ACT, existential, and person-centered techniques. He believes in mixing behavior- and emotion- focused therapies based on the client’s needs. Self-worth and personal values are often central themes in his work with clients. Therapy can feel like serious work, but Preston recognizes the need for positivity, encouragement, and laughter throughout the process. His ultimate goal is for clients to maintain stability and maximize joy in their lives.
Preston received his Masters in Social Work from Columbia University and has experience working with LGBTQ+ clients from positions he held at The Trevor Project and the Institute for Contemporary Psychotherapy in New York City. He currently holds an LMSW and is pursuing LCSW licensure. He is being supervised by Shaina Gordon, LCSW, and under the direction of James Kingman, MS, LPC, NCC.
